Choosing Locks

Quality does matter. Cheap locks don’t last and don’t feel good to use. I’m not saying you need to spend hundreds of dollars to get a good lock. Locks on special can save you money but a cheap lock is asking for problems. I recommend locks from mid range up.
If it’s too good to be true it probably is.
Looks are important. When selling your house everyone that comes to the open home will come in though the front door. If you make a good first impression you’re ½ way to getting a good price for the house so make sure the locks are sturdy and do the job they're supposed to do.
The lock should be designed for your type of door. Just because you like that type of lock is not a good reason to fit it to your door. It should be the correct type of lock. For most types of doors you will have a choice of locks.
Understand how the lock works and what it does and doesn’t do. Some people get locked out of their house because they have closed the door and it has locked and the only keys are inside. Others forget to lock the door. What are you most likely to do?
Listen to people’s opinions and take advice but make your own decisions. It’s your house and your decision - only you know what you want.

Installing Locks

When drilling a hole through a door, drill from both sides of the door. If you drill a hole through a wooden door you may get a mess on the other side of the door as the drill comes out the other side. You are best to mark the door on both sides then drill ½ way on one side and the other ½ from the other side.
Correct tools. A screwdriver is not a chisel so don’t use one as a chisel. You must have all the tools needed before you start.
Tools in good condition. You are more likely to cut yourself or make a complete mess of your door if the tools you are using are blunt or not working correctly.
Take your time. If you are in a rush you are more likely cut yourself or damage the door.
Measure twice, drill only once. Mark where you are going to drill before you drill and check you have marked the door in the correct place. Only then are you ready to drill.
Check that the lock you have installed is working correctly before you close the door. It can be very hard to get a lock off a door when the door is closed. Check that all features of the lock are working properly especially in regard to opening the door.

How to make your castle safe

Walk around the outside of your house. Imagine you are a teenager wanting to get in to your house. How would you get in? Look for windows that don’t close well and easy to get at windows.
Stand outside your door. Imagine you are a big bloke with no neck. What would happen if you kicked your door?
Is your garden shed well secured? It is an offence to carry tools to be used to break into your house or car. Often tools from garden sheds are used to break into houses.
If your ladder is outside it should be locked. How silly would you feel if you came home to find someone had used your ladder to climb in your window or worse your neighbours?
If someone got in though a window how would they get your TV out? Deadlocks will stop people from using your doors to get your stuff out and will make someone think twice about breaking in to your house. Your TV is much the same as the next if somewhere else has no deadbolts, that’s good for you.
When you go to bed at night check all doors are locked and only windows with stays on them are open. We don’t like to think about it but I would sooner loose my TV in a burglary than find someone in my home.
Don’t talk to anyone about the security of your home, good or bad. If someone is asking about your security they may be casing your house. Ask for ID in the way of a security guard licence or the like.
